Matt Caire gives OpenRICE Webinar Presentation on COVID-19 & the Markets
On August 4, 2020, Houston Trust Company’s Matt Caire (pictured left) gave a Webinar through the OpenRICE series sponsored by Rice University on “Navigating the Market in a COVID-19 World”. Matt explored how prior pandemics, such as the Spanish flu, impacted the S&P 500 as well as what we may expect to see happen with the equity markets today as we face COVID-19. To conclude the presentation, Matt identified some helpful strategies for battling COVID-19 in one’s own portfolio.
Couldn’t make the Webinar? Key takeaways can be found below along with a link to the recording:
- COVID-19 has had a greater impact on the global economy than the Global Financial Crisis of 2007-2008
- Its’ impact has varied by sector, with some sectors being hit harder than others
- Unemployment rates around the world have risen significantly
- The Central Bank’s efforts and government stimuli have provided a bounce in the stock market, despite continued poor economic reports that make stocks appear expensive based on their underlying fundamentals
- Market performance has varied widely by sector with real estate, financials, and energy being the big “losers” and technology, health care, and communications being the big “winners”
- The technology sector has played an outsized role in the market’s return
- The key to success for personal portfolio management during the pandemic is to not only create a proper asset allocation that best fits your individual needs and risk tolerance, but also to stick to your plan
